Why Does God Feel Silent? Reasons Why!

Why does God feel silent? Reasons why!

Why does God feel silent? There can be many reasons why God seems quiet.

I’ve been wrestling with God lately.

If you’ve followed our past few blogs, you likely will pick up my tone. I know no other way to live than to walk in transparency as God shines light on my issues.

Yesterday morning I woke up and followed my normal routine. Everything was in rhythm until I couldn’t peel my eyes off my daily reading. I found myself lost in words of Malachi and ended up reading the whole book.

It’s as if every word was God’s response to my journal entries this month.

Why does God feel silent?

“You cover the Lord’s altar with tears, weeping, and groaning because He pays no attention to your offerings and doesn’t accept them with pleasure.” – Malachi 2:13

“You cry out, ‘Why doesn’t the Lord accept my worship?'” Malachi 2:14

What are you hoarding that belongs to God?

Malachi continues in that chapter to discuss the vows that were broken within a marriage.

While that is not applicable in my life because my marriage is intact (and stronger than ever), I took to heart how broken hearted God was to see a vow broken. I began to wonder if I had made any vows to God and treated them cheaply.

Since God doesn’t change (“I am the Lord, I do not change” Malachi 3:6), I knew that if broken commitments made God weary 2500 years ago, then broken commitments broke His heart still today.

The remainder of the book talks about tithes and offerings. God speaks through Malachi to the people of Jerusalem and says they have “cheated Him” and fallen under a curse.

It’s clear that God takes seriously the promises we make to Him. Malachi 3 walks us through a call to repentance.

Ask yourself whether you are following through (whether it’s in your marriage, finances, sharing the gospel with that person, forgiving those who hurt you, etc) with a commitment you made to God.

He never changes and never forgets. He is a loving Father who forgives, but if we simply brush that vow under the rug, there will be distance between you and Him… and I couldn’t think of a worse feeling in the world.

Why does God feel silent in the Old Testament?

I’ll end this by sharing the New Living Translation (NLT) version of Malachi 3:6-12 because of how greatly it impacted my heart this week:

“I am the Lord, and I do not change. That is why you descendants of Jacob are not already destroyed. 7 Ever since the days of your ancestors, you have scorned my decrees and failed to obey them. Now return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“But you ask, ‘How can we return when we have never gone away?’

“Should people cheat God? Yet you have cheated me!

“But you ask, ‘What do you mean? When did we ever cheat you?’

“You have cheated me of the tithes and offerings due to me. You are under a curse, for your whole nation has been cheating me.

Bring all the tithes into the storehouse so there will be enough food in my Temple. If you do,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies, “I will open the windows of heaven for you. I will pour out a blessing so great you won’t have enough room to take it in! Try it! Put me to the test!

Your crops will be abundant, for I will guard them from insects and disease. Your grapes will not fall from the vine before they are ripe,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

“Then all nations will call you blessed, for your land will be such a delight,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
